Betting Baseball Run Lines
By Docs Sports - Monday, April 9, 2007
If you like betting baseball run lines but want even more variety to your wagering menu, then know you have other options. Actually there are a couple of alternatives – the two different varieties of alternate run lines. A traditional run line is essentially a moneyline with a point spread of 1.5 – the favorite has to win by two or more runs for a bet on them to pay off, while the underdog can lose by one and you will still win your bet. Alternate run lines work in the same way, only they allow you to bet on different spreads.

The most anticipated home debut in years takes place tonight in Boston as
Daisuke Matsuzaka pitches at Fenway Park in front of the Red Sox fans against Ichiro Suzuki and the Seattle Mariners. During 1999 and 2000, the only two seasons that Dice K and Ichiro were both in the Japanese League, Matsuzaka held Ichiro to a .235 average with only two extra base hits in 34 at-bats. Early betting for this pitching showdown at SBG Global has the gambling public playing the Red Sox at home.

The New Jersey Nets are trying to catch the Washington Wizards in the Eastern Conference standings and considering all the injuries Washington has it may happen, especially if the Nets win tonight. Jason Kidd and Vince Carter each recorded a triple-double in the opener of a home-and-home series with the Wizards and they will look to lead the Nets as they look for the sweep tonight. But in an odd twist, SBG Global reports that early betting shows the public is leaning towards the Wizards at home plus the points.

NCAA Basketball Championship Game
By SBG Global
The two best teams in college basketball meet tonight in the NCAA Championship game as Ohio State takes on Florida. The Gators were the overall #1 seed in the tournament while Ohio State was the #1 ranked team to end the regular season. This is a rematch of an earlier game this season in which Florida routed the Buckeyes. It is also a rematch between schools as these two teams played for the NCAA football title just about three months ago. Florida is trying to become the first team since Duke in 1992 to repeat as men’s basketball champs, and the first ever to do it with the same starting lineup. SBG Global reports that early betting has the gambling public all over the Gators laying the points.

T.O. Whenham of Doc's Sports Predictions
Baseball season is just around the corner. Finally! No sport offers more consistency or more opportunities to make money than baseball does. Baseball is potentially so profitable that, legend has it, sportsbooks just hope to break even over the course of the season. Despite the comparative ease of handicapping baseball, though, many people who regularly play football or basketball haven’t crossed over to baseball yet. The biggest reason for that is probably that differences between betting on baseball and the other sports can be intimidating if you aren’t familiar with them

A - Allen, Ray. The superstar from Seattle will miss the rest of the season to get ankle surgery. Losing a player of that caliber would be a big deal if the Sonics weren’t so horrendously bad. As it is, the only possible outcome of this setback is that the team might get more balls in the draft lottery.
B – Brooks, Aaron. The Oregon guard and Chris Rock have never been seen in the same room together. I know that’s been written about a lot, but it’s so true that it’s scary. The over/under on bad jokes Brooks has heard about his face in his life is set at about two million. I’d take the over.

The battle of the big men has grabbed the attention in the match-up between Georgetown and Ohio State in the Final Four but it could be the other players for both teams that win the game. The reeling Indiana Pacers face perhaps their most important game of the season tonight as they travel to take on the Orlando Magic. Hockey Handicapping Late Season
By Jimmy Moore of YouWinNow.com 3/26/2007
I love hockey. I love watching and betting on it. But over my many years of watching and betting on it I have learned a valuable lesson. Late in the season it becomes very difficult to determine what teams are trying their best and what teams have already made their post season travel plans. This is obviously true for teams that are out of the playoff race but it can also be true of teams that really can't affect thier

What We Have Learned From Spring Training

Spring training is a strange phenomenon – it never seems to end. Baseball is the ultimate endurance test – a month of games to get prepared for six months of games to decide which teams get to play another month worth of games. Because of that, the ultimate baseball handicapping survival tip is to relax and not overvalue anything. Baseball reality as you know it is going to completely reinvent itself over the course of the season. That being said, it only makes sense that we pay some attention to what is going on in Florida and Arizona to see what

NFL Draft Stock: Who is Rising and Falling?
By Doc Sports 3/23/2007
The Combine is fading in the rear-view mirror, and we are almost into the last month before the NFL Draft. Things seem to be changing almost every day. Houston’s acquisition of QB Matt Schaub from Atlanta changes their draft priorities, and the ripple effects of that move could change the needs of others as well. With free agency prices going absolutely through the roof, some teams are now looking to the draft to fill vacancies that they were originally planning to fill with veterans. The closer we get to the draft, the more intense the scrutiny is over the players, and the more fluid the opinions of the prospects seems to be. A player that seems to walk on water one day can suddenly seem to be unable to walk and chew gum, much less play football, the next day. Here’s a look at eight players that have seen their draft stock change significantly in recent days:

Make Profits with Arena Football
By Doc Sports 3/23/2007
Though it hasn’t exactly rocked the sports world to its foundation, the Arena Football League has entered a new era this season. With the move to ESPN and ABC, and with ESPN taking an ownership interest in the league, the league will certainly become more prominent in the eyes of sports fans and sports bettors. It’s not going to be an instant process, but the exposure on Sportscenter and on the ESPN Web site means that more people will get turned onto the game. Though people have been slow to discover this league, the bettors that have discovered arena football already are happier, and wealthier, for it. Less betting attention can mean softer lines and more wins.

NBA Totals Betting
T.O. Whenham of Doc's Sports Predictions 2/27/2007
By the time you reach this point in the NBA season you may be ready to do something different. Though betting on the NBA is very popular, falling only behind the NFL and college football, it is also very difficult. Many seasoned bettors will tell you that there is nothing consistently harder to make a profit in than the NBA. If you’re struggling to pick a side then maybe you should looked at NBA totals. As opposed to the sides, NBA totals are among the least profitable offerings for sportsbooks, and therefore the most profitable for bettors. Books hope to make a slim profit from offering totals, but losses are not uncommon. They can do this because they do well from the sides, and the betting volume is substantially higher on those sides, so the totals aren’t disastrous for the bottom line. The public at large hasn’t yet discovered NBA totals betting, which means that there is still an opportunity for people who want to put the time and effort into playing them.

A – Aaron Gray. The Pitt center’s ankle is perhaps the most important joint in college basketball right now. If it recovers from its sprain quickly, and Gray has no further problems, then Pitt is a legitimate contender in the tournament. If it doesn’t come around then it could be a short spring for the Panthers. He played at half capacity against Georgetown and it wasn’t nearly enough.
B – Browns. Cleveland won the coin toss with Tampa Bay, so they get to make the third pick in the 2007 NFL Draft this year. If history is any indicator, then that just means that they will have to pay more for their major flop than they would have to with the fourth pick.

The NCAA men’s college basketball Final Four will take place this year from March 31-April 2 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, my adopted backyard. Head-to-Head: NBA All-Star Game, Daytona 500 and College Hoops
By Jordan Adams and Drew Mangione of Doc's Sports Predictions 2/16/2007
This is the pinnacle of All-Star competition in our four major sports. As a teenager, I taped every game. Every pass I saw was bounced off of my garage and every ankle-busting highlight crippled imaginary defenders between me and the basket. I’d like to think my decreased passion for this spectacle comes from my age: I’m older, slower and my dreams have faded. I fear it’s because the total weekend package has degraded. Still, I continue to honestly fret over whether the glut of frontcourt players in the West will beat the guard-laden East, where I place my allegiance.

A – Awful. The Boston Celtics have lost 14 in a row, and there really isn’t anything positive that you can say about the team. They have exactly the record in the last month that they have deserved. So bad. If forced to find a bright spot, you could say that they are 9-8-1 ATS in their last 18, which is a lot better than you might guess that they would be.
B – Big acquisition. Chris Webber isn’t putting up big numbers, but he has been huge for Detroit. The Pistons are 7-3 since he arrived, have covered six of 10, and Rasheed Wallace is certainly enjoying the company. The Pistons still aren’t elite, but the depth and variety that Webber adds makes them much better. As long as everyone is willing to share and to put up with slightly lower individual numbers, that is.

NCAA Bubble Teams
By Doc Sports 2/6/2007
The NCAA tournament is still several weeks away, but true college basketball fans know that the race to get in is well under way. There are several teams that have already locked up their positions, and even more that only have to keep doing what they have been doing to get their ticket to the Big Dance punched. The loneliest place to be at this time of year, though, is perched on the bubble. You could get in if everything goes well, but the ultimate reality is that it is probably not completely in your control. For a fan of those teams, being in that position is a nightmare. For bettors it provides a unique challenge. You have to determine how a team is going to react to their position. They could use the adversity to fire them up and play better ball down the stretch, or they could fold under the pressure and become a bad bet. Figuring out which way a team is going to do is the difference between profit and painful loss. Here ’s a look at four high profile bubble teams to see how they may respond:

I have spent most of the last week scratching my head trying to figure out what to do with the Super Bowl total. The problem is that I can see good arguments for both sides of the number. The total is at 48.5 right now, and it doesn’t seem as of now that the bookies have much interest in moving very far from that number. I’m just a writer and a guy who’s trying to figure out what is going to happen, so this is not in any way an official pick. Which Teams are College Basketball ATS Mirages?
By Docs Sports 1/26/2007
If you find yourself wandering aimlessly through the desert, the last thing you want to see is a mirage. Sure, the palm trees, the big, blue lake with the fountain in the middle and an army of bikini clad bartenders catering to your every whim would seem perfect when you see it, but imagine your disappointment when you realize that it isn’t real. A handful of sand just wouldn’t taste as good as a margarita fed to you by the Olsen Twins. In much the same way, a team that seems like it is a good bet until you get your money on it, at which point it reveals itself as a hopeless loser, is every bettor’s nightmare.

Misleading Super Bowl Angles
By Docs Sports 1/26/2007
As much as I love football, and the Super Bowl, we are stuck right now in the midst of my least favorite time of the year. I hate this week between the Conference Championships and the big game. Not only is there no football worth watching (with apologies to the Senior Bowl), but we are stuck listening to experts with way too much time on their hands, and nothing worth saying, telling us what is important. It’s frustrating because so much of what they say isn’t even remotely important, but the stories are catchy enough that people keep repeating them over and over again. That drives me insane. We’re less than a week into this two-week marathon of ridiculousness, but there have already been a lot of stories that I’ve heard that make my head hurt. Here are six:

A – All-Star. It’s the NHL All-Star Game in Dallas this week. No one watches hockey when it is full of hits, fights and all the fun body contact, so why in the world would people watch it when the players aren’t touching each other?
B – Bush, Reggie. The 88-yard run was as impressive as you expect from this super freak. He sure made it clear that he isn’t yet a mature man, though, didn’t he? Do you think that that front flip into the end zone pissed the Chicago defense off, or was it just a coincidence that those were the last points New Orleans scored?
C – Crosby, Sidney. I know I dwell on this guy, but the Pittsburgh forward will get more attention than anyone else at the NHL All-Star Game. Remember, he’s only 19 years old, so he’s only going to get better than he is, and he’s amazing already. If you haven’t seen him play, do yourself a favor and catch a Penguins game.

Hot NBA Teams ATS
By Docs Sports 1/25/2007
At the very simplest, successful handicapping comes down to this – you have to figure out which teams are worth betting on, and then you have to bet on them. It doesn’t sound that hard and, when we are rolling well, it isn’t. If that’s the approach that you want to take then you need a consistent league, and the NBA is at least as good as any other. Teams in the NBA often go on streaks, and the public often doesn’t react to these streaks as strongly or as quickly as they might be expected to. That can mean profit. Here’s a look at the five most profitable teams against the spread in the NBA so far this year to see which ones stand a good chance of remaining profitable, and which may be due for a downward adjustment.

Bad NBA Teams Against the Spread
By Docs Sports 1/18/2007
In all leagues, but especially in the NBA, a team’s record against the spread does not correlate to their overall record. The best team ATS so far is the Toronto Raptors. They are 25-15 ATS but only 19-21 straight up. Right behind them is the Phoenix Suns. Their 23-14-1 ATS record isn’t as good as the Raps, but their 30-8 straight up record is ridiculously better. The same contrast can be found at the bottom of the ATS list as well. Atlanta, Charlotte and Sacramento are all in the bottom five, and they are all pretty bad. Down there with them, though, is Cleveland, the team with the best record in the Eastern Conference.

Catching up on the NHL 2007
By Docs Sports 1/18/2007
I live in Canada, so I am surrounded by a skewed awareness of the NHL. It is a condition of citizenship here that you are able to discuss the power play woes of teams, the playoff prospects of the nearest squad, and the injuries that are keeping Canadian stars out of action, even if you are far from a hockey fan. I know, and frankly I’m thankful, that the rest of the world isn’t obsessed with hockey like my fellow Canadians are. Despite that, though, hockey games have two teams and you can bet on them, so they are at least worth a little attention. If you haven’t been watching the NHL much this year here are 10 things you need to know to get up to speed with what is going on. Happy betting, eh!

A to Z Sports Review
By Doc Sports
A – Australian Open. They’ve started hitting the fuzzy green balls down under. It would seem like Roger Federer is a lock, and he likely is, but he lost in a tune-up last week to Andy Roddick, so there is at least a little bit of hope for everyone else this week.
B – Bush, Reggie. If you saw his touchdown, or his 25-yard run, or the hit that he took at the beginning of the game, then you know without doubt how incredibly huge the mistake was that Houston made in choosing not to pick him in the draft. The guy does things that no one else can even dream of.

NAU Hoops: Jacking Up Opponents
By Max of Doc's Sports Prediction
In college hoops, there are over 300 teams that play Division I basketball. And, unlike football, all of the teams have a chance to play for the National Championship in April. But like football, most of the national attention is given to the Big Six conferences. The attention is deserved; it’s been since that incredible 1990 UNLV Runnin’ Rebels team that someone from a non-BCS conference won the national title.

Dwight Howard was held to a career low one point in that loss a couple of weeks ago. Howard struggled again Wednesday, managing only six points and seven rebounds but it didn’t matter as the Magic beat Milwaukee 98-73. That was only the 2nd time this season Orlando has won without Howard reaching double figures in either points or rebounding. Howard still ranks third in the league in rebounding at 12.1 per game. "I think he might be a little tired," Magic coach Brian Hill said. "He's played a lot of basketball. It's a legitimate concern. Sometimes, though, when you're going through a tough stretch, you think yourself tired a little bit. It's something we will keep an eye on."

KANSAS AT NEBRASKA COLLEGE HOOPS
By SBG GLOBAL SPORTSBOOK 1/29/2007
Kansas hopes to continue its dominance over Nebraska tonight as the two teams meet in Lincoln. The Jayhawks have won six straight against the Cornhuskers and 15 of the last 16. Nebraska has not beaten Kansas in almost two years but SBG Global reports that the gambling public believes tonight will be the night with most early betting going on Nebraska at home.
Nebraska is in the bottom half of the Big 12 but the Huskers have been tough at home. They won their first nine home games before a 62-61 loss to Texas on Wednesday. Nebraska has lost four of its last five games overall including a 61-45 embarrassment at Kansas State on Saturday. Center Aleks Maric is Nebraska’s leading scorer and he has not done much in his career against Kansas. He's averaged only 8.8 points on 31.9 percent shooting in his five career games against Kansas.

Miami at Lakers
By SBG Global
The Los Angeles Lakers and Kobe Bryant won’t have to face Shaquille O'Neal tonight but they will have to face Dwyane Wade. The Heat have won a season high four straight due in large part to the play of Wade. "We're playing with a lot of confidence. We've got our so-called swagger back," said Wade. The Heat are 4-2 since Ron Rothstein took over as interim coach for the injured Pat Riley. "We're making shots. We're getting good shots," Rothstein said. "We're starting to develop a real confidence in what we can do and that goes a long way." Although the Heat’s confidence might be boosting, it is not with the gamblers. SBG Global reports that according to the gambling public, all money is going on the Lakers – not the reigning champions.

What Did the Bowls Tell Us About Florida-Ohio State?
by T.O. Whenham of Doc's Sports Predictions - 1/5/2007
Unless you are drooling over the GMAC Bowl or the International Bowl (and if you are then you are truly a degenerate), then the biggest focus in your football world right now is obviously Monday’s big National Championship showdown between Florida and Ohio State. Since the match-up is so compelling and controversial, and because it has been set for so long, you have surely evaluated the two teams from every angle. You have an opinion on how the Florida defense will fare when they try to stop Troy Smith, if Florida can find a way to establish a running game, and whether Chris Leak can find consistency against the Buckeye secondary. I’ve been looking at that stuff for more than a month, and I’m sick of it.

Bill Parcells was supposed to be the Messiah. He’s used up the frankincense to laud his arrival, Jerry Jones has spent the gold to bring in the players, and now it’s time for the Myrrh — the incense used by Romans at funerals to mask the stench of the rotting corpse. Terrell Owens has proven to be a net full of polluted fish and is just postponing the inevitable. Oh, and is anyone else upset that Tony Romo has forced us to learn about American Idol while watching Sportscenter?

The Buckeyes have gone wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in the country and opened as a 7.5-point favorite. The line has fluctuated at a few online books, but for the most part it has held firm. It also is available at -7 or -8 at certain shops.

The Lakers are already without forward Lamar Odom. Andrew Bynum is expected to start in place of Brown. New Year’s Resolutions

2006 is taking its last few breaths, and 2007 is waiting in the wings for its grand entry. This time of year, once you’ve managed to finish off all the leftover turkey from Christmas, and while you are watching football games that you would never watch during the regular season, it’s important to sit back and reflect on what you did this year and what you want to do next year. You could make the standard resolutions – get in shape, quit smoking, watch less TV – or you could make the really important resolutions that will truly change your life – resolutions about your sports betting. If you know your betting needs a few tweaks -- and you really need a few wins -- but you’re not sure what vows you want to make to yourself, then here are four resolutions that you can feel free to borrow:

2007 Gator Bowl Preview
by Doc's Sports- 12/28/2006
If you believe the picture that the oddsmakers are painting then this isn’t going to be much of a game. West Virginia opened as one-touchdown favorites, and the support of a large majority of bettors has seen that spread jump up to 11. It could be even more by game time. The Yellow Jackets aren’t feeling a lot of love. The question is whether people will regret that by the end of the game. Neither team has been particularly kind to bettors. Georgia Tech is 6-5-1 against the spread, while the Mountaineers are 5-5-1.

2007 Fiesta Bowl Preview
by Doc's Sports- 12/28/2006
Maybe it’s because I’m a Michigan fan that is still disgusted by the thought of the Wolverines in the Rose Bowl, but the Fiesta Bowl is by far the New Year’s Day game I am most looking forward to. Oklahoma opened as eight point favorites, but the spread has moved down to the key number of seven. People backing Oklahoma could use history to justify their decision – the Sooners are 9-3-1 against the spread. Boise State struggled to overcome the inflated expectations of bettors – the undefeated team was just 5-5-1 ATS.

NFL Passer Rating System
by Doc Sports - 12/14/2006
The San Diego game on Sunday was over soon after it started, leaving announcer Phil Simms desperate for something to talk about. That’s always dangerous. Five Tips from a Top Professional Handicapper
by Mike Miller of Shark Handicapping - 12/12/2006
Most casual sports bettors don’t make a profit from their sports betting hobby. This includes those who are relatively sharp as well as those who could not pick a winner if their lives depended on it. That is not a horrible thing either. If every bettor won, sports books would be going bankrupt far more often than they do, and bettors would run out of places to play their Super Bowl favorite. Football betting is by far the heaviest season where everyone likes to play their favorite team and usually look for lots of “action” that will make watching the game more exciting.
