NFL Betting Preview
New Orleans Saints (5-7) at Atlanta Falcons (3-9)
Monday, 8:30 pm Eastern – ESPN
SBG Global Opening Line: Saints -4.5 , Total 42.5
The Monday night game between the Saints and Falcons will again be overshadowed by the Michael Vick story. Vick was sentenced today to 23 months in jail for his role in a dog fighting operation. Before the season began this game seemed like a good matchup but now it is just a battle of struggling teams. The Saints are 5-7 and without star running back Reggie Bush who is injured while the Falcons are without Vick and starting a third string quarterback tonight.
SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Saints on the Road.
Last week the Saints had a chance to get to .500 and stay in the playoff chase but a botched trick play late in the game led to a fumble and Tampa Bay scored a touchdown to win 27-23. "That's a disappointing loss and probably the worst job I've done as head coach since we've been here," head coach Sean Payton said. "Obviously, I regret the play call. It cost us the game." The Saints have an outside chance at the playoffs but would need a victory in this game to stay a game behind Minnesota in the chase for the last Wild Card spot.
SBG Global Current Line: Saints -3.5 (-115) , Total 43.5
The Falcons are in even worse shape than the Saints. They are going with third string quarterback Chris Redman tonight. Redman replaced Joey Harrington last week and went 16-of-24 for 172 yards and two touchdowns. "He came in and he was calm and he understands what we are doing,' Falcons running back Warrick Dunn said, "He seems to fit well. He is still learning but I thought he executed well and came in and made some big throws with poise.” What helps Redman is that he played for head coach Bobby Petrino at Louisville and understands the system. Running back Jerious Norwood got his first start of the season last week and had eight carries for 94 yards. "We have to get Jerious touches, there's no question," Petrino said. "He's the most explosive player for us." New Orleans has won three straight against Atlanta in this series including a 22-16 victory at the Superdome in October.
