NFL Playoffs: Conference Champions at Stake!
by Jim Feist - January 16, 2012

This is it, the final weekend of games before the Super Bowl with the Ravens, Patriots, Giants and 49ers squaring off. The last month we've been hearing about playoff seedings, bye weeks and home field advantage. Are all those things really important? Historically it has been during the second round of the playoffs. Teams with the bye have home field advantage and two weeks to prepare, both of which are usually important edges this time of year.

NFL Playoff Time!
by Jim Feist - January 8, 2012

As the playoffs begin, those who earned the top two seeds in each conference have a key edge, as they get a bye the first week while watching the others duke it out. Sitting at home this past weekend were the Ravens, Patriots, Packers and 49ers. A year ago the favorites to win the 2012 Super Bowl were the Packers at 5-to-1, the Patriots at 7-to-1, the Steelers at 10-to-1 and the Chargers at 12-to-1. Two got a bye and one didn't even make the playoffs. Last year the teams with byes with the Falcons, Bears, Patriots and Steelers.

CFB Returning Starter Angle Plays Week 6
by Rocketman Sports of YouWinNow.com - October 6, 2011

Many years ago I received a newsletter from Mike Lee, a sports handicapper who just recently passed away in the past few years. I'm not sure if he came up with this Returning starter angle or if he was just passing it along but it has really been a nice addition to my own personal handicapping arsenal. He had said in his newsletter that the previous year the angle had hit above 70%. I was skeptical but I started following the angle and the next two years it achieved the 70%+ mark again. In recent years the angle has not been as strong but still profitable.

September Football: Upset City!
by Jim Feist of YouWinNow.com - September 25, 2011

There's a reason they play the games. Teams don't always play the way stats and power rankings suggest they are supposed to. That's often evident early in the pro and college football seasons because some teams are very different from year to year. In Week 1 of the NFL season, the Bears, Bengals, Bills, Lions and Redskins all won straight up as dog, while the Cowboys and Vikings covered.

Pro Football Stats: Read Between the Lines
by Jim Feist of YouWinNow.com - September 12, 2011

The best time of the sports calendar is here, the opening week of the pro football campaign! There are mountains of stats and angles available for sports bettors to digest from this season and years past. Information certainly is a huge key when analyzing games and point spreads. Sometimes it can seem that there is too much info, but it's essential to understand that stats are only a starting point. They don't always tell the whole story. In fact, stats can sometimes lie, something to keep in mind when searching for football picks.

The New Big 10
by Jim Feist of YouWinNow.com - August 3, 2011

It may be HOT and many folks are still on vacation, but football is just around the corner, the best time of the sports betting calendar. There have been a lot of changes in college football with several teams shifting conferences. Here are some things to keep in mind with the Big 10 for 2011. Nebraska: Welcome to the Big 10! Bo Pelini had a dominant defense last fall, 17.4 ppg (9th in the nation) during a 10-4 SU, 6-7 ATS campaign. The offense was improved, averaging 30.9 points, 247.6 yards rushing and 150.6 passing and for 2011, they return sophomore QB Taylor Martinez (10 TDs, 7 INTs), who ran for 965 yards. New offensive coordinator Tim Beck has tweaked the terminology and trimmed down the playbook. He wants his wide receivers to have more flexibility in their routes so they and the QBs can react to various defensive coverages. The schedule is very favorable, with a rematch with Washington (at home, September 17), plus they get Ohio State at home. Nebraska is 10-5 SU/ATS on the road under Pelini.

College Football Teams with Something to Prove
by Jim Feist of YouWinNow.com - July 26, 2011

Frustration and failure can prove excellent motivating factors in sports. We see quality teams get beaten badly all the time, then bounce back the next game with a terrific performance with an easy win. This can also take place with teams that are off disappointing seasons. Last season Notre Dame had a new coach, a tough schedule and a ton of injuries. Despite this, the Irish rallied around each other and excelled, ending the season on a 4-0 SU/ATS run, including wins as a dog over USC and Miami. When channeled properly, frustration can be focused into positive energy. Here are some college football teams that may have something to prove in 2011.

New Coaches Hope to Upgrade College Programs
by Jim Feist of YouWinNow.com - July 19, 2011

Football head coaches get all the glory, but top assistants can be extremely important in a team's success or failure. Offensive and defensive coordinators have great influence on game plans and a unit's effectiveness. There was no better example than former NY Giants' defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, now with the Rams. He came over from the Eagles under outstanding DC Jim Johnson and was a key cog in their amazing 2007 Super Bowl run. Notre Dame overachieved and made a bowl last season (and won as a dog) under first-year coach Brian Kelly. Assistants are often the NFL star head coaches of tomorrow, as well. A former defensive assistant, Lovie Smith, took the Bears to the Super Bowl. Bill Parcells lost one of his top assistants five years ago, Sean Payton, who went to New Orleans and helped lead the Saints Super Bowl title turnaround. Competent football assistants can be huge assets. Buddy Ryan was the principle architect of the Bears' 46 defense that led the way to the 1986 Super Bowl. He left the team after that victory and the Bears were never as dominant defensively. Let's look at some key coaching changes in the college and pro ranks.

Lean Toward Big Dogs More than Big Chalk
by Jim Feist of YouWinNow.com - May 23, 2011

April and May means that many novice sports bettors may look at the matchups and lean toward ace pitchers and lay the big price. But let me say four words to you: Do not do it. Baseball is unique from football and basketball in that there is no point spread. Instead you bet merely on which team will win the game and this translates into a money-line wager. When betting baseball, most professional handicappers look for prices that are close to even money (for example, -120, -135 favorites or +105, +130 underdogs). Or bettors will play baseball totals where, like NFL and NBA totals, there is a point spread set on each game and the line is usually minus-110 OVER or UNDER.

NBA Playoffs: Beware of Blowouts
by Jim Feist of YouWinNow.com - May 16, 2011

The NBA playoffs are in full swing, which means overall the better teams are battling each other. This is different from the regular season when many nights great teams are playing bad teams and bad teams are playing worse one. Astute sports bettors should pay very careful attention to blowouts. For instance, after losing Game 1 114-101 at home, the Thunder bounced back and topped Memphis, 111-102 the next game, covering as six-point chalk. The Lakers blew out the Hornets in Game 3, 100-86, then the a different New Orleans club showed up the next game, winning straight up as a +5 dog.

Postseason Basketball and Earlier Meetings
by Jim Feist of YouWinNow.com - May 2, 2011

As the NBA playoffs roll on, handicappers should take careful note of how teams did against each other during the regular season. Examine head to head matchups individually and as a group. Does one team dominate another? If so, are the reasons for this, or was it merely a fluke during the long grind of an 82-game schedule? The Celtics went 3-1 SU/ATS against the Miami Heat this season. They won the first three games with relative ease when Miami was still trying to mesh Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and LeBron, before Miami whipped the Green late in the year, 100-77. Those two are dynamite defensive teams and it's no surprise the under was 3-1.

NBA Stretch Run: The Best of the East
by Jim Feist of YouWinNow.com - April 11, 2011

It's been a long haul, this 82-game NBA regular season, but the playoffs are just around the corner. So who wins the NBA title? The most talented team? The luckiest? The favorites? We all know the favorites don't waltz to the NBA Finals. We just watched tiny Butler, a fifth seed in 2010 and a No. 8 seed this year, advance to the NCAA Championship game twice. Upsets littered the March tourney, as it was the first time since 1979 that a No. 1 or No. 2 seed didn't make the Final Four. There's another factor that stands out, best summed up in a famous quote:

The Value of Coaches
by Big Al McMordie of YouWinNow.com - April 9, 2011

Good coaches are tough to beat, especially at crunch time, while bad coaches will beat themselves. This is true in every sport and it's important to understand the value of coaching. A good coach needs talent to win, of course, and the best college coaches are also good recruiters. But winning attracts talent, and good coaches are the foundation for a winning program. Great coaches are also rare, be it football or pro and college basketball. A good coach brings many things to the table beyond recruiting talented players. Smart coaches bring discipline, defense and sound fundamentals.

College Hoops: Best Pac 10 Teams

There's the Big 4 in Pac 10 in basketball with a string of teams battling for the top spot. Here's a look at the strengths and weaknesses of some of college basketball's best teams in the Pacific 10. Arizona: A year ago the Wildcats were young, but now they have taken a step forward as the team to beat in the conference. The centerpiece of the team is 6 -8 sophomore Derrick Williams (19 ppg, 8 rpg), an NBA prospect who shoots 63% from the field and takes 9.3 free throws per game, tops in the nation. He has help with Solomon Hill and Kevin Parrom on a club that has been hot, on a recent 6-0 SU, 5-0-1 ATS run. Arizona is second in the Pac 10 in scoring, tops in three-point shooting (40.8%), tops in free throws (74%) and even plays defense, No. 4 in points allowed (66 ppg). This is a big weekend, playing at UCLA and USC.

Super Bowl Showdown: Packers/Steelers
by Mike Neri of YouWinNow.com - February 3, 2011

A pair of flashy offenses met in the Super Bowl a year ago when the Colts and Saints battled it out, but this postseason has seen the return of defenses. The Steelers and Packers are two of the Top 10 defenses in the NFL, and ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in points allowed. So much for all those rule changes that favored offense the last few years! The Packers ranked an impressive second in total defense last year, 9th this season in yards allowed but second in points (15.6 ppg allowed) behind defensive coordinator Dom Capers, who likes to blitz and mix things up. The defense has allowed 0, 7, 3, 20, 16, 7, 31, 17, 3, 16, 24 and 21 points the last 12 games (12 ppg). The Packers led the NFC in points off turnovers. The Packers have a pair of shutdown corners and a great group of linebackers, led by Clay Matthews (QB Matt Ryan was sacked five times). Green Bay was 6-5 SU, 7-4 ATS on the road and 7-4 under the total away.

Super Bowl Shuffle
by Mike Neri of YouWinNow.com - January 29, 2011

The Super Bowl may be in Texas, but someone will be a new champion in Titletown! Green Bay will be trying to win its 13th NFL championship and its fourth Super Bowl, while the Steelers will be going for their 7th title and third over the last six years. The Packers (13-6 SU/12-7 ATS) have a dynamite passing offense behind 26-year old QB Aaron Rodgers (34 TDs, 13 INTs) and an outstanding defense, one that swallowed up the favored Eagles, a 21-16 Green Bay win, destroyed the No. 1 seeded Falcons (48-21) then held on to win at Chicago, 21-14, despite dominating most of the game. So they are 3-0 SU/ATS in the postseason, winning twice as a dog. The Bears' defense as coordinated by Rod Marinelli tries to confuse opponents, and after falling behind 14-0 early on Sunday, the Packers never scored again. "The biggest thing they do is disguise their coverages," one scout said. "That's the No. 1 thing they've done this year." That's something they will see again, as the Steelers love to disguise what they're doing and throw zone-blitzes at the opposition.

It's also one of the most creative weeks of the sports betting season. While there's only one game left on the football calendar, there are still ample opportunities for betting with hundreds of creative props by various oddsmakers. For example, you can bet on the exact score of the game by each team, or who will score first. A year ago, Pierre Garcon scored the first TD at 10-to-1 odds. Two years ago, RB Gary Russell was 18-to-1 to score the first TD in the Super Bowl and did on a one-yard run. He finished with minus-three yards rushing but cashed that exclusive prop. Four years ago, if you bet on Chicago return specialist Devin Hester to score the first touchdown of the game, you would have cashed a 25-to-1 prop ticket after he returned the opening kickoff 92 yards. 14 seconds in cashing a 25-to-1 ticket is the best way to watch a Super Bowl!

NFL Conference Championships
by Big Al McMordie of YouWinNow.com - January 21, 2011

We are down to the Final Four in the NFL: The Steelers and Jets are back again, joined by the Bears and Packers out of the Black and Blue Division. Now you understand why the Packers dumped aging Brett Favre for Aaron Rodgers? Rodgers completed 31 of 36 passes for 366 yards and three touchdowns Saturday against the Falcons in Atlanta, a 48- 21 blowout win as an underdog. That makes Green Bay 2-0 SU/ATS in the playoffs despite being a dog twice. The defense held Atlanta to 194 total yards and forced 4 turnovers, so this team is clicking everywhere. The defense has allowed 11.8 points per game the last 11 games. Green Bay is just 5-5 SU, 6-4 ATS on the road, but who wants to play them now? The Bears and Packers split two meetings and both sailed way under the total: Chicago won in Week 3, 20-17 on this field, while the Packers won at home in Week 17, 10-3, in a game the Bears shouldn't have cared that much about (but did). That Week 3 meeting was an odd game, as Rodgers threw for 316 yards and the Green Bay offense had the edge in yards 379-276. Cutler completed 16 of 27 passes with a touchdown and an interception and neither team could run the football. The Packers lost because of an astounding 18 penalties for 152 yards and 2 turnovers! They won't be that sloppy again, so the Bears need to be better.

Busting the Bowls
by Mike Neri of YouWinNow.com - January 1, 2011

You can't look solely at season stats during the bowl season, as that can be extremely deceptive. Season stats and matchups are worth examining, of course, to give a sense of where a betting number should be and what might happen. But the bowl season is so much about emotion and interest. Who wants to be here? Who wants to play? Some bowls are seen as a reward, especially for small schools or ones that weren't expected to get this far. Miami of Ohio, for instance, won the MAC and will be playing in a bowl this week, off a 1-11 season in 2009. Making ANY bowl has to be a huge honor (and surprise) for everyone involved in the football program.

Competition on the field won't be as intense as September, of course, as wins aren't as important as evaluating young talent and trying to keep players healthy. However, there will be betting lines available on preseason pro action and it's possible to cash winning tickets. Here are some things to keep in mind when watching preseason football.

NBA Playoffs: Its in the Match-Ups
by Big Al McMordie of YouWinNow.com - April 22, 2010

The opening day of the NBA playoffs, last Saturday, had a pair of overs and a pair of unders, the kind of balance oddsmakers like. Even less surprising was that the game featuring the uptempo teams (Utah, Denver) sailed over the total, while defensive-oriented teams like the Heat, Celtics and Cavaliers sailed under.

Basketball Success: Players or Coaches?
by Big Al McMordie of YouWinNow.com - April 8, 2010

Good coaches are tough to beat, especially at crunch time, while bad coaches will beat themselves. This is true in every sport and it's important to understand the value of coaching. A good coach needs talent to win, of course, and the best college coaches are also good recruiters. But winning attracts talent, and good coaches are the foundation for a winning program. Great coaches are also rare, be it in football, or pro and college basketball. A good coach brings many things to the table beyond recruiting talented players. Smart coaches bring discipline, defense and sound fundamentals. They also know how to teach and help develop confidence, which is especially essential with college athletes.

Big East CBB Conference Tournament Preview
by Rocketman Sports of YouWinNow.com - March 9, 2010

Year in and year out, the Big East is always the most wide open conference tournaments. This due to the strength of the league as the Big East boasts eight teams with at least 20+ wins. Syracuse won the regular season title posting a 15-3 conference record, finishing 2 games ahead of Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Syracuse, however, took a step backward as the number one team in the country on Saturday as they got stomped by a Louisville team who is the true dark horse in this tournament.
Pittsburgh and West Virginia have both been playing extremely well and either one could give Syracuse a run for their money. Pitt has won eight of their last nine, their only slip up coming on the road against a streaky Notre Dame club who is peaking at the right time even with out their best player, Luke Harrengoty. Villanova is another team with a 13-5 record in Big East action, however they have struggled mightily down the stretch here in late February and early March. They do have experience and great guard play which seems to be recipe for post-season success in college basketball so you can't count them completely out.

They are also 14-2 in conference play and lost their lone match-up to Temple by a final score of 77-72 at Temple. These two teams along with Richmond have been very kind to bettors wagering on them all season long. Temple is 20-11 ATS, Xavier is 19-10 ATS, and Richmond is 17 -9 ATS.

Kentucky Seeks Revenge!!
by Rocketman Sports of YouWinNow.com - February 25, 2010

The Kentucky Wildcats will be looking to avenge their only loss of the entire season when they play host to South Carolina on Thursday night. As this is a classic revenge situation, odds makers have the proper adjustments by installing Kentucky as 16? point home favorites over the Gamecocks. South Carolina won by a final score of 68-62 on January 26th led by Devan Downey who scored 30 points in that game. The biggest problem he gave Kentucky was his ability to dribble penetrate into the lane and get to the free throw line where he scored 10 of his 30 points. Also, helping the cause was the fact that Kentucky turned the ball over 15 times and you simply cannot do that if you want to win on the road in the SEC.

nba picks of the weekBCS Hysteria: No. 1 vs. No. 2!
by Jim Feist of YouWinNow.com - January 4, 2010
After recovering from the weekend's New Year festivities while celebrating and analyzing sports picks, we glide through the end of the bowl season. The GMAC and Orange Bowls are appetizers for the tune-up that is the January 7 Texas/Alabama showdown for all the marbles.
Orange Bowl (Tues., Jan. 5): This game is outdoors in Miami's Land Shark stadium pitting a pair of dynamite ground games. Iowa (10-2 SU, 7-3-1 ATS) was unbeaten through October, a lumbering miracle with a plodding offense and tough defense, before November brought injuries and back-to-back losses to Northwestern and Ohio State.
They are not pretty, but have a great defense and a terrific offensive line. The offense (23 ppg) prefers to run the football behind offensive tackles Bryan Bulaga and Kyle Callaway. Junior QB Rick Stanzi (15 TDs, 14 picks) missed the last month of the season with a severe ankle injury, but should be ready. He is 17-4 as Iowa's starting quarterback.

nba picks of the weekBowl Bonanza!
by Jim Feist of YouWinNow.com - December 28, 2009
As 2008 draws to a close, we find ourselves smack in the middle of the bowls. You shouldn't be bowled-out, either, as they build to the crescendo that is the Texas/Alabama showdown for the national title. Humanitarian Bowl (Wed., Dec. 30): Check the weather for this game, as it is frigid and can get windy in this outdoor game from Boise, Idaho. Out from the MAC come the Bowling Green Falcons (7-5 SU/ATS), a scrappy, pass happy team under new head coach in Dave Clawson. Senior QB Tyler Sheehan (23 TDs, 6 picks, 3,665 yds) is a terrific talent and leads a team that can't run (81 yds rushing pg), but averages 310 yards passing and 27 points.
